NYCPOA President's Message Safety of our customers and our customers' passengers remains a top priority of the New York City Pedicab Owners' Association as our industry heads into the arms of the city's regulatory structure. Our standards will continue to exceed those of the City of New York, which do not require proper training for new pedicab renters. The Department of Consumer Affairs' (DCA) shift on driver's license requirements from requiring a valid U.S. state motor vehicle driver's license previously in 2007 to accepting a driver's license from ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, is of concern. The Association regards a U.S. driver's license as a prerequisite for driving a pedicab in challenging NYC traffic, as opposed to a license from anywhere in the world, which is insufficient accountability for anyone ferrying passengers in our fair city. THE NYCPOA's services will be in demand more than ever as all participants in the local pedicab industry are required by law to take minimum steps to become accountable for their local business activities. The NYC Parks Dept is moving to curb chaos in Central Park with new draft rules. [note: see the 2004 memo from Parks on our INFO page] The NYPD has new legal tools to ban pedicabs in midtown for months on end. Public relations situations brew constantly. Legal battles are inevitable. Standards always are in demand. A strong standard bearer for responsible members of our industry, representing us in the best possible light wherever necessary, allows participating operations to band together and achieve far more than is possible individually. In the coming weeks, the NYCPOA will be welcoming with open arms new members of a more responsible industry. Join us as we enter an auspicious new era in our small but burgeoning world of people-propelled carbon-neutral passenger transport here in NYC! - Gregg Zukowski |
